Portland Mills Cemetery Newsletter - 2015


The annual meeting of Stockholders of Portland Mills Cemetery was held on June, 1, 2015. President, Carolyn Smith Collins called the meeting to order.


Janet Spencer Barr, Secretary, read the minutes from the last meeting, June 2, 2014. The minutes were approved as read.


Don Roberts, Treasure, gave the treasures report.


Expenses             $  2,696.88

Income                 $     733.77

Endowment       $66,000.00

Bank Balance     $  9,783.10


The report stands as read.


 Even though the date of the Shareholders Meeting has been on the first Monday of June at 2 p.m. since before minutes were recorded, it was voted to move the meeting to the first Sunday, in June, at 2 p.m. We hope this will give many of those who work during the week a chance to attend the meeting.


Stephanie, who gave the cemetery grounds report for her Dad, reported that a stone foundation was really close to the curbing and hard to mow around.  Options  will be considered. The mower is doing well but next year will be time to trade it in. The mulching  will be put down soon.


There was a discussion on filling the cracks in the drive way and coating the drive with an estimate from Gary and Paul’s Asphalt at a cost of $5,370.75. Harold will meet with Todd Crane and get a second estimate and only have the cracks filled since the drive was top coated not too long ago.

You can access the Portland Mills Cemetery on the internet at David Marrero has put all of the cemetery information on that website. It is a great source of information on all who are buried at the Portland Mills Cemetery and the Old Seceder Cemetery. The Veterans  are listed with their service listed as well. If anyone has more information on Veterans than we have on the website, please feel free to let us know.


Don Roberts has retired from the board as Treasure. He has been the Treasure of the cemetery for 21 years. We so appreciated his years of service in that office.


Donations to the cemetery are always welcome. We operate the cemetery on donations, sales of lots and interest earned from the Endowment. The Endowment  is only used in emergencies. All donations are tax deductable. Please send your donations to Todd Hopkins, 3214 N 1200 E, Russellville, IN 46175.


Elections were held. Todd Hopkins was elected Treasure and will fulfill the last year on Don Robert’s contract and he was also elected to 2 years succeeding the one year to a total of 3 years. 


Carolyn Smith Collins, President, and Dan Harbison, Vice President, were re-elected to 2-year terms.


The next meeting will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2016.
