Portland Mills Cemetery Rules and Regulations

Organized June 6, 1898

  1. The proprietor of each lot shall have the right to ere t proper stones, monuments, or sepulchral structures, except that no slab or headstone shall be set on the edge over two and half feet in height, and shall be three inches or more in thickness.
  2. Proprietors of lots shall not have the privilege of planting and cultivating trees, shrubs, and plants on their lots, except by permission of the Directors.
  3. If any trees or shrubs situated in any lot shall, by means of their roots, branches, height or otherwise, become detrimental to the adjacent lots, walks, or avenues; or dangerous on inconvenient to passengers, it shall be the duty of the Directors to enter into said lot and remove the said trees and shrubs, or such parts thereof as are thus detrimental, dangerous or inconvenient.
  4. Lots shall not be used for any other purpose than as a burial place for the dead; and no trees within the lots or borders shall be cut down or destroyed, without the consent of the Directors.
  5. All foundations of monuments, and all other structures, shall be made satisfactory to the Board of Directors.
  6. If any monument, effigy, or any structure whatever, or any inscription be placed in or upon any lot, which shall be determined by the Directors to be offensive or improper, or injurious to the appearance of the surrounding lots or grounds, the said Directors shall have the right, and it shall be their duty, to enter upon such lot and remove the said offensive or improper objects.
  7. Proprietors shall not allow internments to be made in their lots for remuneration.
  8. Enclosures for the lots are not allowed.
  9. No internments are allowed until payment of the lot is provided for according to the regulations
  10. The construction of vaults or tombs shall be under the direction of the Board of Directors.
  11. In the erection of monuments, vaults, tombs, or other structures, a place will be designated by the Directors for the deposit of the stones, brick or other materials, which shall not remain longer on the ground than is actually necessary for their construction. All graves shall be dug under the direction of the superintendent, for which reasonable charges will be made.
  12. Proprietors wishing improvements on their lots must pay for same when ordered.
  13. The grading of all lots must be under the direction of the Directors, and by hands employed regularly on the grounds.
  14. All workmen employed in the construction of vaults, erection of monuments, landmarks, or any other work, must be subject to the control and direction of the Directors; and any workman failing to conform to this regulation, will not be permitted afterwards to work on the grounds
